Juvia's Place: The Magic Palette Swatches + Review
A black-owned cosmetic company called Juvia's Place is slowly taking over. They are known for their awesomely pigmented shadows that don't cost you an arm and a leg.
They just recently came out with "The Magic Palette" priced at $35, which is more expensive than their other palettes.
This palette is pretty huge. It's bigger than 2 Too Faced Chocolate Bar palettes if you were to lay (not stack) one under the other on top of this palette. The sizes of the shadows themselves are bigger than your average single eyeshadow. They are about the size of a Colourpop Super Shock Shadow container.
The palette comes with 16 shadows. 6 are matte and 10 are shimmer/metallic.
The Magic Palette is said to be inspired by the Moon and Sun goddesses of the wild.
This is also a cruelty-free!
This is with flash and prior to dipping my fingers into it.
This is the back of the box. The front of the box looks the same as the front of the palette itself.
Here is what the front of the palette looks like.
Here is the thickness of the palette.
Again, 16 shadows. 6 mattes and 10 shimmers/metallics.
I will be finger swatching and brush swatching side by side because the pigmentation you get from swatching with your finger won't always be what appears on the eyes with a brush.
I will swatch once across the back of my forearm with my finger, and then I will brush swatch next to it on the right, built up twice.
To brush swatch I will be using an elf "eyeshadow brush" lol. It's pretty dense and soft. I use this brush to apply all of my lid shades.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure you guys want to see some swatches now, right??
Here is the first half of the palette. These shades are part of the Sun Goddess section which contain mainly warm tones that a lot of people will gravitate towards. This section gave me ABH Modern Renaissance vibes.
First row:
The picture I took of the shadow in the pan didn't pick up really good and makes the shadow look gold rather than yellow.
Both the finger and brush swatches came out really good!
This color is very beautiful, I can't say I have a shade like this in my collection already. It makes me feel very summer-y!
Again, the brush swatches of all of these are built up twice.
This is the first matte shade, and honestly, it's not the best.
It was pretty rough to the touch and if you can't tell by the finger swatch, it was a little patchy.
The brush swatch, however, came out a lot better.
Again, my camera didn't pick up the exact color of the shadow in the pan. It's actually more of a pale pink, which you can see in the swatches.
The finger swatch and the brush swatch came out nicely!
THIS matte was a lot better. It was really soft and buttery and applied smoothly with both the finger and brush!
I can see this shade being perfect for setting your eyeshadow primer.
And here is the entire first row swatched side by side!
Second row:
This shade didn't do too well with the brush swatch.
The finger swatch is pretty good, though. The shade is more peachy-pink than the previous pink shade and has gold glitter.
This was another one of the smooth mattes.
It applied beautifully with both my finger and the brush.
I looooove this shade!
It looks almost gold in both the pan and the swatches, but in person, it comes off as having more of an orange tone in it.
I can't wait to slather my eyeball in this!
As you can see in the swatches, the brush swatch made the color loose some of its metallic-ness, but still pretty nonetheless. Just make sure to dampen your brush and/or apply some glitter primer to your lids if you really want any metallic shades to pop!
This matte shade was pretty good too. It is very smooth and glided on easily.
The brush swatch made it loose some of its intensity, though.
And here is the second row swatched side by side!
Now, we will convert to the dark side!
This section of the palette is very dark and cool-toned, which represents the Moon Goddess aspect of it perfectly.
Third row:
Ooooooo this was one of the first shades that caught my eye in this palette!
I've been on a lavender/purple-kick lately and I can't get enough.
This color is very unique because it has a shift of pink through it!
The brush swatch is lacking, but I can always fix that with a bit of dampening!
A beautiful, pigmented and smooth dark teal that swatches amazingly with not only a finger, but a brush also?
Sign me up!
I love that they included grey shades in the palette because grey tones are perfect when you are wanting to go for a smoked out look.
This shade applied wonderfully with both the finger and brush!
The finger swatch and the brush swatch of this shade are almost identical!
Again, I'm loving the grey shades. I especially love that they included a darker grey and a lighter grey.
Third row of swatches side by side!
Fourth row:
Ugh, this is another one of those chalky matte shades.
The pan makes the color look like it would be a super dark, almost black, purple.
But when you swatch it, it's kind of an average shade of purple that is blue-based.
The finger swatch is horrible, but the brush swatch is really good in comparison!
This shade is another one that caught my eye! It is so so beautiful! It's almost like a grey-toned teal.
This is one of those shades that makes me think of mermaids lol
The finger swatch is good, the brush swatch is okay. It would have to be applied with a damp brush to really show up in my opinion.
It's another one of those mermaid shades and one I was really excited for!
Sea foam green!
And the finger and brush swatches were really impressive!
This isn't the best matte navy shade I have ever tried, but it's not too bad.
In comparison with the previous dark matte shade, this one's brush swatch was lacking compared to the finger swatch. I was hoping it would be the opposite.
And here is the final row of swatches side by side!
Overall review:
For the price and for the amount of product that you get, this is a pretty awesome palette.
This is a good palette to choose if you want to start experimenting with more color or if you're wanting to venture out into some deeper and darker shades, but you still have neutral shades to fall back on.
I think the shade selection is great and there is a color for everyone.
The majority of the metallics/shimmers were pretty pigmented, but a couple of the mattes fell short. I have tried a lot better.
The metallic/shimmer shades' texture remind me a lot of the Jeffree Star Skin Frosts, which I enjoy.
They have this stiff but creamy and almost wet-like texture to them which makes them apply like they are foiled.
Would I recommend this palette? Yes
For who? People who want to step outside of their comfort zone or people who want to add more color into their collection
